The House I Live In

4.5 stars... Raising pointed questions
This movie is the latest documentary from writer-director Eugene Jarecki, who has previously brought several other interesting and acclaimed documentaries, including 2006's Why We Fight and 2010's Freakonomics. Now comes Jarecki's latest.

"The House I Live In" (2012 release; 108 min.) is a detailed and critical look at "the War on Drugs", now more than 40 years on since President Nixon declared that war in 1971. The filmmaker starts at home, literally, as his revisits with his family's (black) nanny from his days growing up in suburban Connecticut and New York in the 1970s. As it turns out, the lady has lost several family members, including a son, to drugs. From there Jarecki interviews lots of different people, from jailed drug dealers to a US federal judge to a prison security guard, and on and on. One of the historians interviewed claims that the criminalization of drugs goes back to the beginning of the 20th century (when opium was outlawed to deal with the...

Required viewing for those who want to be informed about the engineered die off going on in the United States.
Economists use the term "excess population" often to describe families and individuals that, due to sudden economic change, are useless or no longer needed by society. We are living in our own version of the potato famine. This movie shows how the lower economic classes in the United States are being systematically preyed upon and wiped out by the corporate run prison system.

Eye-opening & heart-wrenching
A really stunning look at reality for those who have bought into the villainization of drug users and sellers that has been the norm of American media and entertainment for decades. This film helped me to learn about the elephant in the room when it comes to U.S. politics, justice, and economics. Here's my full endorsement: Thanks for the education!

One thing that the film doesn't explore much is solutions. However, it does tell us what and where the roots of the problem are. The roots are in floundering desperation which exists because we cause it with prejudice, bigotry, miseducation and corralled poverty. The "drug war" is one aspect of a war on the poor. Ending the drug war is the implied solution, but the film's elucidation portends just how complicated and far-reaching that end would be. Ending the drug war would mean putting a big hole in the budget of many law enforcement agencies, for one thing, and it would impoverish some rural communities where the main business...

Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory

Powerful And Disturbing: Eighteen Years Later, The Harrowing True Life Case Of The West Memphis Three Continues
The plight of the infamous West Memphis Three has been the center of controversy for almost two decades now. Upon discovering three eight year old boys murdered and discarded in the Robin Hood Hills area of West Memphis, Arkansas in 1993, a subsequent investigation caused local police to target three teen outsiders for the crime. Based on the most specious of evidence and a rampant desire to see justice done for such a heinous act, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley were convicted and sentenced in 1994 despite a clear lack of physical evidence or motive. Due to Echols appearance, interest in metal music, and fascination with disturbing imagery, the deaths were chalked up to being a part of a dark occult ritual. And a frightened and justifiable mob mentality ruled the day (especially as word of Misskelley's questionable confession circulated).

But the facts never really added up and filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky were on hand to document the...

The crime of the 20th - 21st centuries reaches some finality
PARADISE LOST 3: PURGATORY (2012, 120 minutes, HBO Films) - Here is the anxiously awaited 3rd installment of the continuing sagas of Damien Wayne Echols, James Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley, Jr., all convicted of murdering three 8-year-old boys in 1993. It wasn't aired on HBO and I just saw it On Demand - the only place it is available right now. It had originally been scheduled to air in January.

This compelling albeit slightly muddled documentary sequel begins by retelling the story of "The West Memphis Three" - Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley - and the horrible crime of three young boys' murders. At first I thought this was retread, but I quickly realized this was a vital documentary tool to catch up a viewer who might be new to the story.

The documentary does an excellent job of stunning the viewer by explaining how the case exploded in everyone's faces in the mid-2000s. New evidence was discovered and all of it re-examined; among the evidence was DNA and a new...

The DVD has cool special features, and the film... legendary and revelatory
This "Paradise Lost" trilogy is beyond documentary film making. A better description of the films would be that they are legendary journalistic heroism that are philanthropic education for the American public, in regards to the horrors that CAN arise from the U.S. justice system when it fails.

This film was never meant to be the "final chapter" of the Berlinger and Sinofsky series on the West Memphis 3 case. When the film was practically 100% finished, a surprise hearing was called regarding the case. The hearing was prompted by the fact that the original trial judge David Burnett (who was also the judge for EVERY SINGLE APPEAL HEARING regarding this case) denied the WM3 an evidentiary hearing, despite allegations of juror misconduct in the original trial, recantations of testimony used in court, and DNA evidence that excluded the three defendants from the crime scene or the bodies AND pointed in a different direction that the police never investigated. Burnett's decision...

Wake in Fright [HD]

A restored masterpiece
I came across a description of this film a while ago which made it sound like an overwrought B Picture, a format to accurately represent the world it depicts - melodramatic, crude and brash. It is much more than that. From the opening 360' panning shot around the tiny wooden platform of an Australian outback station, taking in two shabby and rusting buildings dwarfed by an endless vista of red sand, to the brilliant portraits of a range of characters who inhabit this barren and malevolent landscape, it constantly surprises and delights with visual power and human complexity. It is no surprise to discover that the underlying material on which the film is based, a novel by Kenneth Cook, was to have been a project for Dirk Bogarde and Joseph Losey at one point in its development. The film ended in the extremely capable hands of Ted Kotcheff and screenwriter Evan Jones and is beautifully constructed and paced. There is throughout a sense of threat and a sustained tension, but the tensions...

Awesome
This film (set in the Australian Outback) is at once an hallucinatory nightmare and intensely realistic - so bizarre and yet utterly believable. The acting is very fine - everyone disappears into their roles, and the cinematography and montage are excellent. Donald Pleasance is especially good as the crazy old doctor. The climax is unbelievably intense. If you are a member of PETA you will not be able to watch the final Kangaroo hunt sequence.

Highest recommendation!

Long overdue Masterpiece
Probably Ted Kotchef's finest film, "Wake In Fright" (aka "Outback"), shocked shamed, and enraged a substantial chunk of the Australian population. It died at the box-office, got one TV screening in the early eighties (where I saw it), and then was forgotten -- or at least given up for dead.

Almost forty years later the negative was rediscovered only days away from final destruction (in the US of all places) and a badly needed restoration was begun.

The story: an endentured school teacher in a tiny outback town heads for Sydney and six weeks holiday. But only a day into the journey he loses his money gambling, and is left at the mercy of the local townsfolk.

Like Roeg's Walkabout, Kotchef sees the Australian landscape with the fresh eye of a foreigner. He portrays a society that no domestic film maker would've dared at that time. And he makes a brilliant film doing it. But where Roeg found a desert teeming with life and energetic beauty, Kotchef...

Falling Uphill

Wonderfully strange and inquisitive.
An offbeat story about a young 20 something searching for his place and identity. He has decided to leave San Francisco, and meets a homeless girl who becomes his sage and they end up helping each other greatly. He also has to deal with the love he has for his female roommate who is in a relationship.

Coming to terms with your own skin - and relationships in the 2010's
Rick Bosner and his cast and crew take us on an eclectic trip through the other San Francisco while giving us rare insight into the hearts and souls of some twenty-somethings in our current age.

It is a very modest budget indie film that merits your attention.

Entertaining movie watch once and archive it, The storyline was too incomplete could have been better developed. Maybe I may give a once over at another time.

Fairhaven [HD]

Loved this movie!
This is a thoughtful, inspiring Gen X movie about "who am I, who are we, and where does it go from here?" This movie will speak to anyone who has ever woken up and wondered if there is more out there than the present moment and what does it take to make the changes to get where we want to go. A deep cast performs flawed characters who win your heart. The cinematography is stunning--great shots of the eastern coastline in winter.

Don't Bother
There was no real story line or plot. The cinematography others may refer to is close ups of getting stoned. I found nothing remotely intersting or noteworthy about this film.

I really wanted to like it but....
I really wanted to like this movie and there were parts when I thought it might get good but it never did!! It lacks a story line. You just feel like you're watching someones life without any direction what so ever! There were a couple parts when I thought it was going to get good but it never did. In the end I'm glad it was only 1hr 20something minutes that I wasted of my life instead of 2 hours.

Soul Food Junkies

Review of DVD - Both a Cultural History and a healthy food lesson
This show which aired on PBS is now (or will be next week) available on DVD. While the title sounds like one of Food Network's shows about where to find and eat the best fried chicken, blak-eyed peas, collard greens and ribs, it's really just the opposite.
Documentary filmmaker Byron Hurt grew up eating (and cooking with his mom and sister) "soul food" at home. He noted that his father was gaining a lot of weight and looking unhealthy. When his father died because of the unhealthy food he was eating, the younger Hurt set out to discover why black Americans were eating so much of it and where it all began. This 63-minute film gives a cultural history of food in the households of blacks (going back to the days of slavery and plantations). Hurt does visit some renowned soul food restaurants (but doesn't promote them) and interviews a number of "food historians" and "culinary historians". (Who knew such a designation existed???). The best-known interviewee is former comedian, now...

Great journal of history
Enjoyed the history lesson! Hopefully more people will get the opportunity to view this wonderful documentary and personal story. The facts shared through out the story were very well told!
PBS & Byron Hurt did a great job. Just in time for Black History month!!

Soul Food Junkie
Very good documentary. Clears up myths about cooking and eating soul food. Also gives examples of how to make soul food healthier.

Nothing special.
Don't waste your time with this. It shows about 5 different places, several of them were not even natural, such as swimming pools. I didn't get it.

Pistols and Petticoats

"Pistols and Petticoats" has seen better days
There are considerable reproduction quality issues with this DVD release of what was a very cute television series and is now apparently in the public domain. The quality of the original film to DVD master transfer was so poor that I returned the DVD and I would not recommend a purchase for the offering price. It might be a better choice to use Amazon Instant Video to view this program. I ordered the DVD because I am a fan of the late Ann Sheridan and wanted to view some of her last work in television.
There is nothing wrong with this cute episode as far as the content goes, but the DVD quality is lamentable. First, the DVD gives us only one random episode of the television series, promoting it under the Cinema Classics title, as though it were a "feature" and having a running time printed on the disc of 90 minutes. One would assume feature-length; its not. This is only an average hour length TV show. The titles of the show indicate that it was filmed in...

NO sound
Would love to see this but it has no sound.Streaming has problems with no sound. This is rare an episode from the little seen TV series with the very talented Ann Sheridan at the end of her too short life and the always hilarious and Ruth McDevitt.

When I was a kid....
When I was a kid (age 8-9 or so) Pistols & Petticoats was one of my favorite tv shows! I loved Ann Sheridan. But let's face it, even she couldn't compare to Gunsmoke & Miss Kitty. So I'll have to say that P&P is #2. But does anyone I know wonder why I'm a redhead now?

Love Me [HD]

An Attractive Young Cast Can't Quite Overcome A Lackluster Mystery
The teen friendly mystery "Love Me" seems perfectly geared toward viewers familiar with the Canadian hit franchise of Degrassi High (specifically The Next Generation) and ABC Family programming. Its young stars have all made a name for themselves in that environment and so a lot of familiar faces can be seen wandering around the fictional halls of Hampton Prep. That is the setting for this romance/thriller in which everyone is a suspect in the disappearance of a classmate. And as suspicions rise to the surface, danger may be lurking for anyone who uncovers the truth. Starring Lindsey Shaw (Pretty Little Liars), Jamie Johnson (the aforementioned Degrassi: The Next Generation), and Jean-Luc Bilodeau (Baby Daddy and Kyle XY), the lead performances are earnest and the actors are appealing. It's the central mystery that strands the entire movie in a kind of inertia. With a lack of real suspects, the resolutions are not difficult to see from the very beginning. So when the shocking...

YOU KILL ME WITHOUT FEELING GUILTY
This low budget film starts out with Melissa (Kristina Elliott) refusing to get into a car whose driver is not seen. She runs into the woods away from the said auto. You see no one, then suddenly she turns around and screams. It is not possible for it to have been the person in the car. Is this a clue? As yet you do not know if it was someone else, or that person popped into that location like a bad slasher film.

The scene changes to Sylvia (Lindsey Shaw) high school student who wants to be in love. She falls for Lucas Green (Jamie Johnston) a rich boy who dated the missing girl and has a high creep factor. They dropped so many clues about him being the killer, you know it is not him. Dayln (Kaitlyn Leeb) is the self centered jealous ex-gf. Harry (Jean-Luc Bilodeau) is the loser geek kid who makes cartoons.

The acting of Lindsey Shaw and Jamie Johnston reminded me too much of the caliber of acting we saw in the "Twilight" series nominated for a number of Razzies...

Blu-ray Review: "Love Me"
There's always room for another "psycho-guy goes nuts over uninterested ex-girlfriend" thriller. Audiences love these types of "who-dun-it" films. Anchor Bay Films isn't ashamed to participate in putting the next one out either. Their newest release in the genre, "Love Me," will air on the Lifetime Movie Network over and over again in a few months guaranteeing them a fat wad of cash for rights.

Sylvia Potter (Lindsey Shaw) falls head over heels for quiet rich boy Lucas Green (Jamie Johnston). Things get complicated when she, her friends, and family discover he's the prime suspect in the disappearance of a 16-year old girl (Kristina Elliott) in the neighboring town of Ridgedale. Lucas swears he had nothing to do with it. Can their love survive the investigation and turmoil? More importantly, can Sylvia survive through it all?

"Love Me" is exactly what it appears to be when picking it up in the video store or at Redbox. It's a PG-13 thriller which appeals to anyone...

Horror Rises From the Tomb

Horror Rises but no for long
The new BCI DVD of "Horror Rises From The Tomb" is a revelation. Fully uncut and in widescreen, the movie has never looked so good. Sadly, while it glows in the glory of stunning picture and sound, the film itself comes up a bit short. But that's not to say it isn't fun. The story involves a medieval warlock named Alaric and his lover who are executed and buried for their evil crimes. In the present day, two couples, one of whom is a descent of the original wizard, decide to search for the bodies and dig them up (for reasons I cannot quite remember), which of course leads to dire consequences for all. What initially impressed me was the stunning prologue, beautifully filmed on a windswept plain somewhere, but this was immediately followed by a shift into the present day where two modern, beautiful, swinging couples spend far too long having dull conversations and generally wasting running time before the evil ancestor is finally dug up and (surprise, surprise) rejuvenated. Before the...

A superb DVD release of an obscure film
First of all, I am the type of person that likes to view rare and obscure horror flicks, hence why I bought Horror Rises From the Tomb on a whim. I was totally surprised by the DVD when it arrived. First of all, its a two disc set with three versions of the movie! The first disc contains the international uncut version in Full Screen and a version called the "Clothed" version in Widescreen. The "Clothed" version is easily the best looking of the three version and looks really crisp for a 30+ year old relatively unknown film. Unlike the "uncut" version, the "clothed" version actually contains alternate sequences that have many of the nude women "clothed", and also contains some alternate edits to cut down on the nudity. The "uncut" international version contains all the gore and nudity, but the negative doesn't look near as good as the "cloth" version. It's still easily worth having. The second disc contains yet a third version of the film which is a full screen transfer fo the U.S...

A review from a Naschy fan
HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB (HRFTT, from here on out) is one of Paul Naschy's superb entries in European horror. It is a totally, 100% unique brew that was created in a feverish night of speed and no sleep...and it does indeed show! Naschy, known more for his Waldemar Daninsky werewolf pictures, creates another iconic character that has more in common with the classic Universal horror film of the 30s and 40s than with other Euro-horror films of the era (the 70s). No, there are no black-gloved mysterious killers stalking women through Italian (or, in this case, Spanish) streets. Here in HRFTT is a Alaric du Marnac, a warlock who dabbles in a bit of this and that (vampirism, black magic, necromancy, cannibalism, etc) who was influenced by the real Frenchman, Gilles de Rais -- a purported child murderer and who knows what else for sure. Truly, du Marnac is about as evil of a character you will ever find in any horror film of the last 50 years; no sense of conscience, he exists purely for...

To.Get.Her

Must see
This is a beautiful film that everyone should see, especially if you have or are a teenager.

At a recent screening I attended, I spoke with a woman (40s) in the audience and she told me how moved she was. She said that she was just like the girls in the movie when she was a teenager and only wished a movie like this was around then to make it easier to deal with... to know she wasn't alone.

To.Get.Her is a powerful conversation starter for the difficult to talk about things that effect us. It is smart, genuine, and gorgeously shot.

LOVED IT.
I loved this film!!!! The girls, the story, the weird way it was shot. Just so cool. Never seen anything like it.
And the ending BLEW ME AWAY. Watched it with my mom and she loved it to. We had a good chat after, I'm not like any of the girls in the movie, but some of my friends are and it was good to talk about them with mom. Plus the music is really cool too.

to.get.her.....got me
What an amazing movie. You don't have to be a teen or recently out of your teens to get this movie. I"m in my 40's and remember feeling like the girls in the movie. What would I have done if I had access like they did? I hope more people see this movie and more people talk about it. Love the funky lighting and music too. Wow, just wow.

Ben Lee: Catch My Disease

An Intimate Rock Documentary About The Nature Of Celebrity
It's been a few years since I've thought about Australian musician Ben Lee and, I must admit, I was rather surprised that he was the subject of the new documentary feature "Ben Lee: Catch My Disease." While I think that the movie caters primarily to those familiar with its subject, it also serves to effectively demonstrate the cycle of celebrity with Lee as its example. Even if Ben Lee isn't a common name around your household, the film still provides useful insight into the nature of stardom and the phases of popularity inherent in the entertainment world today. And it's packed with testimonials from other faces that you certainly will recognize! Lee seriously dated Claire Danes, married Ione Skye, and befriended others such as Michelle Williams, Winona Ryder, Jason Schwartzman, Zooey Deschanel, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, and the Beastie Boys' Mike D. All weigh in on Lee in this rather informal, but intimate, portrait of the man who has traveled through the music industry and...

Great music celeb profile. And great music
Ben is a really nice guy, you can tell that from this film which follows him over a number of years through the good and the bad. Very interesting look at celebrity in today's society. In the end, Ben finds a certain calm amidst all of the pressures of the music industry. Very intimate interviews with friends and past lover - Danes, gives strong insight into Ben and that time period in all of their lives.

Search for the Great Sharks

Okay documentary, nothing spectacular though!
I consider myself a documentary, "Discovery Channel" freak, and of the many topics and themes which interest me the most, sharks in general rank among the top 10.

So my review of this DVD may be viewed as biased from the start, hence a high 4 or 5-star rating may be expected. Unfortunately, I've seen the disc and am somewhat disappointed. For one, how can you call a disc "Search For The Great Sharks" when you essentially featured just two species (the whale shark and the ever crowd-pleasing great white)? Nothing about hammerheads? Makos? Tiger sharks?

Nevertheless, I give it 3 stars if only for the overall audio and video quality (expect nothing less from IMAX - I own a couple others myself). Also interesting trivia which would probably please an audience of all ages. The film, unfortunately, is only 46 mins long (how come all IMAXes are this short? grrr!), with nine chapters as follows: 1. Domain of the Shark; 2. Behavior; 3. Steel Cage; 4...

Nothing special. Imax deserves something better.
This documentary needs badly a better direction and focus. There's nothing here we have not seen in the Discovery Channel. Furthermore the pace is slow, the story bland and repetitive (how many times must we show wonder for a senior cientist?)and the resources such as Imax film are wasted. If you want to watch something spectacular, try Ray Macgillivray's The Living Seas, Imax-Alaska or Africa-The Serengeti. Buy this only if you want to complete your Imax Dvd Library.

Too much above water filming
Although the shark footage is great. I was hoping that there would be more actual footage of sharks. Much of the movie seamed to focus upon the researchers looking for the sharks, instead of the sharks themselves.

Karate Warriors

2 great movies for the price of 1
I have been looking forever for a widescreen print of Dragon Princess, and I finally found it! I will talk about the movies below, but first I want to talk about the grindhouse experience this disc offers. Before the double feature starts 2 original Sonny Chiba trailers are shown. After the first movie ends, 2 more trailers are shown right before the second movie begins.

DRAGON PRINCESS-

After Sonny Chiba's daughter witnesses him get beat up in a spectacular fight at the start of the movie, Sonny Chiba trains his daughter (Etsuko Shihomi) to be a karate killing machine. Sonny Chiba's role is basically only a cameo since he dies 20 minutes into the movie. So now his daughter goes to take revenge. She teams up with kung fu movie legend Yusuaki Kurata to take down the killers.

The action is fantastic. Sonny Chiba's fight at the start of the movie is the best fight in the movie, and the other fights are good. Etsuko Shihomi was one of very best...

Karate Warriors
The movie Karate Warriors was decent by Sonny Chiba. It was not the 75% of a fighting kung fu movie that I expected. It had a nice plot though. One guy complained that it could be bought cheaper in a store. Hea, if so, do like I did. Buy the Prime time from Amazon and get it even cheaper.

Anyway, good plot, the sound and picture were good too. I saw some reviews that complained about this. But otherwise, a movie worth watching anyway.

The Killer Must Kill Again

Solid and Stylish Thriller
I was going to automatically and immediately buy this film because it was presented by Mondo Macabro, a name I have learned to really respect and trust. MM has introduced me now to about a half-dozen astonishing films I'd previously never even heard of. Well, I hesitated in buying this because of the mixed reviews here on Amazon. So, I rented it first on Netflix.

Well, I watched it last night. This movie is totally solid, replete with suspense, beautiful venues, awesome music soundtrack, some scantily clad women, and the exotic atmosphere which many of us love in these European films. There is a surreal ambience in this genre which is totally addictive, and thus I have every Mario Bava, Jean Rollin, and Dario Argento film in print, and most of Jess Franco's stuff as well. What is sometimes lacking in plot is more than compensated for in scenery and dreamy weirdness. (I actually like these movies despite the common theme of murders of women, not because of them. I do...

Phenomenal Giallo Masterpiece!
Not knowing what to expect from this movie I went in with an open mind. I was amazingly pleased with everything about this film. It exceeded my every expectation and more.

A chain of crimes begins when a dishonorable man named Mainardi (George Hilton) blackmails a serial killer (Michel Antoine) into murdering his wife. After a young couple (Alessio Orano and Cristina Galbó) burglarize the murderer's car, with the newly deceased corpse in its trunk, the killer sets off on a maniacal crime spree.

The film moves at a steady clip, the camera movements are slick and professional and the cinematography makes great use of shadow to create atmosphere and heighten tension. The film receives a stunning 2.35.1 anamorphic widescreen transfer taken from the film's original negative. Aside from some really minor print damage that shows up in the form of the odd speck here and there, and the very occasional scratch, this transfer looks amazing.

The acting is...

superb presentation of a great thriller
Reading another customer review I was forced to write my own for the first time! I couldnt disagree more strongly - this is a great movie and a wonderful presentation from Mondo Macabro. In reality this movie isnt a giallo in the classic sense ( maybe why some folks dont get it) - Cozzi subverts the genre he knows so well from working with Argento - and creates a tense thriller much more in the mould of Hitchcock's Frenzy than the multiple murder pile up we're used too. Our concerns are for the killer more than the victims which creates an unease whilst watching that I really enjoyed. The movie comes in a stunning cinemascope presentation, with a great pounding score - loaded with three (!) featurettes but by far the best extra is the fascinating commentary track - its like a masterclass in thriller making - Which is good for me!

Miss Nobody

Climbing The Corporate Ladder On Rungs Of Blood--Lightweight Black Comedy With A Winning Lead Performance
Nobody enjoys a light and frothy comedy about murderous machinations more than I do. And "Miss Nobody" is a particularly bubbly addition to the genre. It is about the lightest and breeziest black comedy that you're likely to encounter. And yet, while I enjoyed the film to a large degree, I just wish it contained a few more surprises. Set in the corporate world, the plucky heroine (Leslie Bibb) advances through the ranks through the most unorthodox and unpleasant of means. While her exploits might be fun and amusing--you can't help but feel that you've seen this all before. Not nearly edgy or original enough, though, I'll still recommend the film for fans of the genre for one big reason. Leslie Bibb gives a winning comedic performance that oftentimes seems fresher than the material she's given. Bibb has been kicking around for quite a few years, it's time she got a chance to shine (she takes an executive producer credit here as well).

Miss Nobody
I happened to catch this one on TV, and it was definitely interesting. Not a typical boring cliche movie. It has a pretty original story line, and Leslie Bibb does a great job playing this character. She comes off as playing a sexy character but still somewhat awkward at the same time, and she makes it work. The only thing I really "disliked" about the movie was the apparently rampant amount of perverts and sexual harrassment at her work, and how everyone was in on some big secret plot. Aside from that, it was good and had a good ending.

The Rite [HD]

Satanic Activity/Demonic Possession/Exorcism
I just saw this in the theater and it was excellent! Our story begins with a Catholic mortician (Rutger Hauer) and his young son, Michael (Colin O'Donoghue). Fast forward about 10 years, Michael is a man and leaves the Kovak & Son family business to study to become a priest. Four years later, Michael is graduating the seminary college but is very confused about his future. He has not taken his final vows when he is sent to Rome for two weeks training on The Rite of Exorcism. When he is encouraged to meet the less orthodox Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), he sets out on a path of understanding that far exceeds his expectation that demonic possession is just a psychological condition.

This slightly less than 2 hour film is well done, sufficiently scary, suspenseful, and reminds us that Satan is the master of illusion. It is also a film about the importance of having faith. Sir Anthony is outstanding in his role as a priest who has been performing exorcisms for some time...

Anthony Hopkins at his best
The Rite looked like it would be a mixed bag right from the start. The film seemed to suffer the same fate many other films before it fell victim to and that's giving away too much of the storyline in the trailers. On top of that, it was a film that revolved around exorcism which is a subject that usually leads to disappointing results. Expectations would lead one to believe that The Rite would have enough momentum to reel you in only to drop the ball during its finale similar to last year's The Last Exorcism (except hopefully without the appearance of a neon red, glow in the dark fetus). Luckily, the film has a few surprises up its sleeve.

The cinematography in the film is probably the first thing you'll notice visually. The opening of the film makes things like dripping embalming fluid, a swing set on a playground, and an overturned shopping cart seem more interesting than they really are. Rain is an element used fairly often in the film to usually signify when something...

Hypnotically fascinating...intense thriller with strong performance from Anthony Hopkins...
THE RITE may well have produced some mixed reviews, but I have to admit that having just seen it at my local multiplex theater, I found it a gripping enough experience although I was not particularly fond of the limp ending. The script should have provided a more satisfying conclusion.

ANTHONY HOPKINS, manages to create a full-bodied character from some very thin material. Matching him every step of the way as a young priest who is beginning to have too many doubts about his faith is COLIN DONOGHUE. He holds his own in every scene with Hopkins, who gives his creepiest performance since "Silence of the Lambs."

A major asset is the film's cinematography, especially for the scenes in and around Rome, and whether photographed in rain or shine. The film, in fact, owes a lot of its spellbinding power to the fantastic camerawork and the delicately haunting background score with its occasional uses of strong chords for shock value.

But it's Hopkins who anchors...

Greatest Places

A Short Tour Of Planet Earth
An Imax film with no real plot or story, its a short tour of some of "The Greatest Places" on Planet Earth. (I would have given the film an extra star if there had been some sort of "connection" for the audience). There are some truely stunning wildlife and location images in the films 40 minutes and because of that it really needs to be seen either at an Imax cinema or on a large sceen TV, but even on my TV at home it looked incredible. The film visits the Amazon, Namib, Greenland, Okavango, Greenland, Tibet, Iguazu and Madagascar spending differnt amounts of time at each. Some of the places visited deserved a bit more time spent on them while others could have been a bit shorter. An interesting feature of this DVD that I'd like to see more of is the seperate Music and Ambiance track. You can turn off the narration, (which is a bit corny at times), and just listen to the music and natural sounds. The only problem with this feature is that the music...

A way for people to travel without spending alot of money
I don't get to travel, so this is my way of experiencing other lands and cultures. I have a friend who has a large screen projector home theater system. This DVD was excellent for this type of viewing and listening experience. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the DVD movie. It was like taking a space ship to another world and having a narrator explain it to you. Colors were clear and vivid, background music was soothing, I found it to be relaxing, and a way to escape the stresses of life.

It's not great but good.
It's not one of the best IMAX movies out there. But is very interesting and very well presented. The audio and video are of great quality. The only reason I couldn't rate it great was because 40 min. is too short a time to cover 6 great places in the world. I wish they made it at least 60 min.

5 Broken Cameras

touching personal story of occupation
I just saw the film recently, and was struck by how it uses a simple story of broken cameras to show how time passes for Palestinians under Israeli occupation. Slowly and painfully, with injustice heaped upon injustice, yet they keep trying to raise their children with dignity. Very moving.

My only criticism is that the subtitles are often hard to read. An easy fix.

Captivating!
The movie was so beautifully put! Finally something that shows the Palestinian's side of the story. I am so intrigued, and proud to announce that it will be played at a MLSA event at my law school.

A moving portrait of a land and people under seige
5 Broken Cameras is a vital resource for anyone trying to understand the tragically undertold story of the Palestinian side of the conflict as opposed to the ubiquituous and disingenuous Israeli narrative we know so well in the West. Here we see the life of a young Palestinian boy growing up in the immense shadow of land theft and brutal occupation by the Israelis, a life unrecognizable in its misery when viewed from the comfort of an American lens of perspective. The bravery and resilience of the residents of Bi'lin in the face of unimaginable brurtality by their neighbors cannot be overemphasized. A must see!

The Mulberry Tree

Simply Wonderful
Great movie! I had the pleasure of seeing this film at a local film festival. The story is very well executed with depth that is not often seen anymore. The acting is superb with Joe Morton and Louis Crugnali giving absolute, award winning performances. You won't be disappointed.

Outstanding movie
Highly recommended. A heart breaking story about a young man struggling with his past and where his future should lead. The complex relationship between family members and the losses they each suffer will leave you pondering the movie for some time after.

Beneath the Blue

Good, but not great
Beneath the Blue was a good, clean, family movie. The underwater filming was great and as someone who knows of a teen who died of a blackout I appreciated the warning about free diving.

I rented this movie because I volunteer a lot with ocean conservation efforts. Apparently this is a sequel to "Eye of the Dolphin" which I will watch soon to better understand some of the character backgrounds. There were definitely a few moments when I felt like the third person left out of insider information. But, overall, I enjoyed meeting the characters and thought all the acting was well done. Some of the lines made me roll my eyes, but I assume the target audience is young teens. I did wish some of the scenes between Alyssa and Craig would have been longer to flesh out their attraction to each other (I wanted to know what was going on in their heads more). Also, I had no idea how old Alyssa and Craig were supposed to be... originally I thought teenagers, but Craig is in military and...

Good Clean Fun
My younger daughters watched this and loved it. They are in their younger teens. No inappropriate themes or language. The movie seems to be (among other things) about choices and the fall out of those choices.

It was just okay
It isn't anything earthshattering, but it was mildly entertaining. It almost seemed like it was an after school movie or something like that.

In Organic We Trust [HD]

Interesting and Important film
This was a really enlightening and engaging film - great to find out
the meaning behind the labels and beyond that, how to eat healthy.
Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know what is in the food
they are buying and have the tools in hand to make informed choices.

Interesting but short on analysis
I learned a few new things from this video, which was good. But I find that the narrator makes fairly weighty assertions without presenting any facts, data, analysis etc. to back them up. For example, he mentions a number of times that in addition to the unhealthy chemicals, "large agri-business pollutes the environment"; my understanding is that large businesses typically drive efficiency up and waste down. So even though a farm may use bigger equipment, the fuel used per tomato grown will be less than that of a small farm (as a simple example). Maybe the claims are correct that large agriculture is worse for the environment but I think it is the job of a documentary to explain and provide evidence... not simply to repeat the common catch phrases and conventional wisdom of a popular movement.

a production that educates
Brings to light how industry is getting into the market of organics, which is actually bringing down the quality of foods.
Encourages me to keep going to farmers markets instead of buying organics at the grocery store.

Pawn's Move

All Things Work Together.....
It's a love story set in a small town USA. A young man who has a left a small town after the loss of an older friend....he died. A young woman who left another small town when she called off a wedding because the groom wasn't right for her. They both arrive in a third small town on the same bus. They each get jobs and begin to take notice of each other. The interest grows and there are a couple of hiccups in the growing relationship. It's positive feel good movie that was very refreshing for me. I really enjoyed it!

Wonderful, Charming Movie
I just viewed this on Netflix, and I hope amazon makes it available for viewing for their prime members as well.

An absolutely wonderful movie with old-fashioned values. I really enjoyed the slow, evolving pace. I'm so tired of movies where you're hit with a two-by-four.

What really struck me was the acting by the lead actor Tyler Roberds. Understated, compelling and absolutely wonderful. I enjoyed his acting so much, I had to look him up on google. He does have a website (if sparse!)...but he's young and just starting out, apparently. I sure hope we see more of him.

Excellent movie all around. Highly recommended.

P.S. I'd like to point out that one reviewer practically declared this film to be of Calvinist ilk because of the term "Providence" used in the movie. I'd like to point out that providence is a term used in several Christian denominations, and Wikipedia has a nice explanation of the term.

PAWN'S MOVE
Pawn's Move is a must see. It has a variety of issues that it handles with integrity. The actors played their roles convincingly. Mr. Vetter shows great promise in the movie industry.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow

Doesn't Get Any Better Then This!
So who says you need a huge budget, a lot of computer generated special effects, and super big names to make an excellent horror film?

I saw this originally back when it first aired on TV and have never forgotten it. The screenplay is superb; I believe even Stephen King could not have done any better. One is kept wondering throughout the film if a vengeful human--District Attorney, Bubba's mother, the little girl--might be exacting the justice that was denied in the courtroom. The ending shot is almost poetic in both its simplicity and what it confides to us. The director halts the film at that touching, if horrific moment, while the little girl's voice continues speaking to the Scarecrow as the credits roll. It doesn't get any better then this.

I have always found scarecrows to be unsettling at the least and a frightening parody of man at best. Curiously, its origins actually stem back into ancient pagan religions. Scarecrows actually do not scare crows,...

The BEST Made-For-TV Horror Movie!
I can't believe this gem of horror is finally being released on DVD. I'm glad VCI Entertainment stepped up to the plate on this one, just like they did when they released Gargoyles, which is another made-for-tv classic. Dark Night of the Scarecrow has everything going for it and then some. It's got actors who know how to act, spooky atmosphere, decent script, great kill scenes, and of course, a healthy dose of the supernatural.

I must've been around ten or eleven when I first watched this movie with my mom. We both loved it, especially Charles Durning's role as the town's mail carrier. The expressions on that guy's face are incredible. His performance alone really draws a person in. And Jocelyn Brando's performance as the mother is also amazing.

I hope that VCI does a great job on the transfer. I hope it's progressively scanned with a high bitrate without any noise reduction filters or edge enhancements. Also, I'd love to see blacks as deep as possible and colors...

Dark Night of the Scarecrow
Excellent movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I first saw it in 1981 and I still find it one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. The fact that you don't have to endure the usual bloody mess makes it easy to watch time and time again.

End of Watch [HD]

Good Cop, Good Cop
Directed by David Ayer, "End of Watch" is a police drama that celebrates the value of friendship and the all too frequently unsung efforts of police officers to try to keep the rest of us free from the violence and evil the officers constantly endure. The movie is set on a rough police beat in South Central Los Angeles and follows the activities of two young officers, Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhall) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena) as they cruise the streets and fight crime. Some scenes of the movie take place in the police academy or the stationhouse and show the cameraderie among the men and the women in uniform.

The movie is a mix of introspection and action. Brian and Mike depend upon each other for their lives, and they are fast friends. As they drive the streets they discuss their families, their respective ethnicities and backgrounds, their dreams and their women. Mike has been married to his high school sweetheart for eight years, while Brian has found a new romantic...

Great Movie!!! Very Real!!!
First of all, let me say that I am not a professional movie critic. So, I am just going to evaluate the movie based on my personal experience and enjoyability of the film. This film was phenomenal. It was very well directed. The plot was very credible and for those working on law enforcement, it will seem too accurate. The actors nailed it. It was also filmed like "Cloverfield", to make you believe that you are part of the action as a first person viewer. That was my only complaint. Since, this type of filming seems to give me headaches. Overall, I would give this film 5 stars based on the following: enjoyability, credibility, acting, costumes/clothing, special effects and plot delivery/transition and conclusion. This is not your typical "happy ending" cop movie. So, if you want a happy ending fake cop movie, do not bother watching this one. Great movie, overall. Very well portrayed.

A you-are-there, gut wrenching cop drama
If you ever wanted to know what it was like to be a beat cop in L. A. without the danger, this David Ayer film may be as close as you'll get. Shot in the overused "found footage" style, we get a tension filled action drama with excellent character development and sense of realism. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena give memorable performances as partners who are also best friends and confidants, each inviting the other into their extended families.

Officers Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Zavala (Pena) are hot shot cops who want to do more than make traffic arrests while patrolling a mixed gang section of L. A. Sometimes heroic (rescuing children from a burning house or from an abusive home) and sometimes foolish (not waiting for backup) they manage to stumble upon an arm of a Mexican cartel involved in human trafficking. Taylor is filming everything as a project for a class he is taking at a local college. In addition to using a small traditional HD camera, he attaches mini...

Death Race 3: Inferno (Unrated) [HD]

Frankenstein In The Desert
I can't believe it , Roger Corman's 'DEATH RACE' franchise just acts like the energizer bunny , it keeps going and going. Now Paul W.S. Anderson and Director Roel Rene have taken the race to the Kalahari desert in 'DEATH RACE 3: INFERNO' -2013 with virtually the same cast and introducing Dougray Scott and drop dead gorgeously deadly Hlubi Mboya taking care of the villain department. Luke Goss scowls and rants returning as Death Race champ Frankenstein and his sidekick Katrina played by the equally gorgeous Tanit Phoenix kicks butt to win the final race for freedom. The real stars of the film however are behind the scenes as the beautiful editing by Radu Ion and Michael Trent blending with the first rate photography by Wayne Shields elevates the film higher than it should be. The music score by Trevor Morris is just OK but eventually overwhelmed by the incredibly loud explosions and grinding motor engines persisting throughout the films running time (but that's why we watch this...

IT STARTS AND ENDS WITH YOU
Frankenstein (Luke Goss) is up for his final race for his freedom. In a hostile take over Weyland (Ving Rhames) has sold the company which sponsors the races to Niles York (Dougray Scott) an immediately unlikeable person. Niles plans to franchise Death Race around the globe, but to have an audience he needs Frankenstein. Frankenstein is given the ultimatum by Niles: Lose or Die.

The race takes place in South Africa through friendly and unfriendly shanty towns as well as desert. Frankenstein races against people who would rather see him dead than win the race. Names like: Razor, Nero, Joker, Pretty Boy, Olga, and Psycho. Prior to the race the female navigators are placed in a caged death match as 16 Xena looking/dressed women fight each other until 10 are left.

There is a quick flashback to explain Frankenstein, but it is short. The film has plenty of inane "explode on contact" action, racing, hot babes and a twist. Break out the popcorn.

Nobody Walks [HD]

Just a Tad on the Pretentious Side
I could go into a lot of detail, but I just don't feel it's necessary. Not when this one point kind of sums everything up: who, in god's name, would say something like, "You betrayed me!" in real life?

If someone said this directly to me, as in the context of this movie (i.e., supposed sexual betrayal), or really any context, I would laugh. Because no matter how dramatic my life has gotten (Ooh, I'm starting to get older and I have a teenager and pre-teen via my marriage to someone with kids, so I should probably cheat on my spouse with someone younger and more passionate than me in a sad, sad attempt to recapture my 20s, and when, in a shocking turn of events, that same temptress isn't that serious about me and doesn't even attempt to understand how serious this is for me, I will throw a tantrum that shows, not only am I selfish and deluded, I'm also not really mature enough to have kids, let alone sex), I refuse to be around people who talk like this. People who speak in...

The film has its moments but will be forgotten pretty quickly
Who says an indi-film can't be a run of the mill soap opera? That's pretty much what we get here in this brief (85 minutes) look at sexual desires, infidelity and questionable morality. The best thing director/writer Ry Russo-Young ("You Won't Miss Me") has going for her is the cast.

John Krasinski stars as Peter, a Hollywood sound technician who is married to Julie (Rosemarie DeWitt), a therapist. Julie has a teenage daughter (India Ennenga) who has a crush on her step-dad's assistant (Justin Kirk). A twenty- something documentarian named Martine (Olivia Thirlby) shows up to get some help with special effects and sound for her film about bugs.

Martine is a friend of a friend and once Peter first meets Martine, everybody's hormones kick into high gear. Like all good soaps we've got the hunky ex-hubby (Dylan McDermott) coming around for dinner. We've got Julie accepting flirtatious advances from a patient. The daughter has her eyes on the assistant and the...

Better than expected from reading other reviews
I think this movie is getting an overly bad rap. I found it to be a perfectly fine indie movie. It's not an action flick, the movement is slow, but it seemed that was reflective of the space and weather and light of the movie- the whole feeling it gives in general. The light is very pretty; visually, it has a warmth & ease-I found it a pleasure to watch. The storyline wasn't earth shattering, just perhaps a bit unrealistic in terms of how easily this girl almost beds everyone within shouting distance, but other than that I enjoyed how this story was told and think it's worth a watch. Give it a try and don't expect a movie with bow tied around it at the end and you might enjoy it for what it is.

My Own Love Song

The Good, The Bad & Healing
I rented this movie for $2.00 from a Red Box because I love Renee Zellweger. I had never heard of the movie, so I was surprised to see it for rent. My sister and I love watching movies - both at the theater and at home. As I told my sister, "this movie is a keeper!"

This movie is odd, quirky, and musically haunting. It is a lovely story of how our lives can touch other lives in big and small ways. The reality of broken lives all around us is too true. The times of hopelessness and loss are too true. And the possibility for anyone of us who have been desperately hurt physically, emotionally or mentally to find acceptance, healing and/or love from another person - even someone other people dismiss as "crazy" or too strange - is also real. This is the foundation of this story.

The main characters are Jane, a white quadriplegic (Renee Zellweger) and Joey, a mentally unstable black man (Forest Whitaker). They are the unlikeliest of friends. Jane is singer whose...

Liked it and didn't.
I had mixed reactions. Yet this film is not just another journey story; but uniquely different and probably so simple that one can easily miss the meaning because of all the details. It says what it says including a sequence of unusual animations in the form of giant drawings of colorful birds with narration. That is just one of the "different" parts!

Basically the story line involves a woman(Renee Zellwenger) who, having been injured in an accident and now in a wheelchair, had to give up her baby son seven years hence, because she could no longer care for him. This runs along side the antics and compassion of her schizophrenic and very supportive(He calls himself her 'bodyguard') friend.(Forest Whitaker) Together and joined by two more (Nick Nolte in a wonderfully supporting part..alone worth the price of renting the DVD) in which on a trip to attend a first communion, each one seeks resolution from past taumatic wounds such as: the car accident; great losses,...

An "independent" film with BIG stars - and a Bob Dylan soundtrack to boot.
I don't think this "little" film played many theatres when released in 2010 but it sure has GREAT credentials and star power. Just look: We have Academy Award Winners Renee Zellweger and Forest Whitaker in the key roles, Academy Award nominee (twice!) Nick Nolte (in a brief role similar to what Jeff Bridges has been doing lately) and it was directed by French Director Olivier Dahan (who won Academy Awards for the French film "La Vie En Rose" (the Edith Piaf story). Oh yes, did I forget to mention that it includes original songs and music by Bob Dylan???

With all that said, the film is really a "small quiet film". It's the story of two "friends" - one the crippled Zellweger (who used to be a singers-songwriter - with a vinyl Lp to her name!) and Whitaker - who has some mental issues (and sees angels!) and cares for - and transports Zellweger They set out on a journey to attend her (now adopted) son's Communion in New Orleans. You've seen these films before and this has a...

Ring of Fire

Good Imax Film
I have purchase several Imax DVD'S. I would rank this film better than most(Grand Canyon and Niagra) and below (The Liveing Sea and Alaska. It is more educational but it does not lack spectacular photography. That is one of the reason I buy Imax is to see thing's you do not ordinarely see. Some Imax films try to tell two to four short stories in a film; to me those film's don't work. I do not buy Imax to see pedestrian plot's; I buy to learn and enjoy the photography. This film fits the bill. If your interested in volcanoe's I do not think you could buy a better film.

Ring of Fire
I actually bought this for my 4 and 6 year old sons. They love it and it made them interested in volcanoes and earthquakes. They quote it! It is informative and shows more than a US perspective, although a lot of time is spent on San Fransisco, Mount St. Helens. and Hawaii. It also covers a Japan and Indonesia. It entertains and informs. The trailers included are good too.

Very educational, not so entertaining.
The standards for documentaries nowadays are very high. You need to succeed not only in the educational side of the story but also in entertaining the viewer. As an example, Greg Macgillivray's work in The Living Seas, Stormchasers or The Magic of Flight does everything in order to keep you on the edge of your seat without loosing the story's edge. Here, you can learn a lot from the sysmic and volcanic activities that determine most aspects of the people that live inside the Pacific Rim. Nevertheless, you never feel quite engaged and/or commited to the story as you do with the formerly referred work. The story starts with a visit to Chile's newly born Navidad crater and leads us through a journey that involves San Francisco, the Aleutian Islands, the coasts of the former U.S.S.R., Japan, Hawaii and Indonesia. Anyhow, some shots are impressive- like San Francisco's earthquake recordings- some are really dull. The video and audio quality are very good, though not impressive. Unless you...

DO IT FOR YOU
This is another in a continuing film series in which Danny Trejo plays a larger part on the cover than he does in the film. At least a zombie doesn't eat him after 10 minutes. Based on a true story the film opens up with Emilio (Alvaro Orlando) in a south Miami mental health facility. We don't know what he did, but he is being punished by being locked alone in a cell with Danny Trejo trying to be his friend. Emilio describes the events that lead up to this scene.

We find out Emilio, who grew up with hoodlums, was rescued by his uncle Frank (Oscar Torre) who taught him how to box. Emilio is an undisciplined boxer with a lot of energy who dreams of fighting for the Golden Gloves. Toss in a female promoter and love interest (Camila Banus) an old dog, a mom (Yeniffer Behrens) with an abusive boyfriend (Steven Bauer), the predictable music montage training sequence and championship fight and you pretty much have a formula film.

The acting was decent. The women were...

Enjoyed
I love a good true story and this movie did not disappoint. The acting was great, really enjoyed the movie.

An average movie
Although Danny Trejo is given top billing and appears on the cover, his part is very small. Of course, he is excellent in that small part. The rest of the movie was your average "poor boy makes good", not a bad movie to rent but I wouldn't buy it.

The End of Love

Almost too real...
Having gone through something similar, and being self employed in this crappy economy, the portrayal was almost too real for me. From the pain of loss to the mundane beauty of life with a toddler...from trying to manage appointments with an active 2 year old looking on...to being terrified about your financial situation, to just craving a moment of fun now and then with your friends, this movie was filled with the rhythm and emotion of life. Right on!

Excellent Film!
Great acting by the entire cast especially the little leading man in the film. The film takes you through a range of emotions that any parent would feel when dealing with the loss of their loved one in the midst of struggling to raise their child. A beautiful story about life, love, loss and the human condition.

heartfelt and very warm intimate human moments
I really enjoyed this movie. I thought there was nice genuine human emotions and insight into what most people who are a 1-person caregiver have to face on a daily basis. I did love the innocent point of view from a child who has no clue as to what his parent is going through.

The Company Men [HD]

"You can probably skip the diet cokes. They aren't working for ya"
This film seems to be getting mixed reviews at best. It wasn't even released nationwide, or at least not at a theater near me, and very little promotion was given to it. I think that's a shame because it's an enjoyable film that actually explores not just the recent economy and downsizing in Corporate America but the North American situation (obsession with property, possessions and passing pleasures rather than true happiness). That said, I understand that films involving the recent economy haven't done well and I can see why many people wouldn't be eager to get out only to sit in a theater and watch what can be seen as a very depressing story that has a lot of truth to it.

Outside of that fact I still say this is a good film if not entirely great. Ben Affleck is well cast and likable as a man who has it all until his company is hurt by the economy and he finds himself included in the list of recent layoffs, the last thing he expected given his position at the company. He...

A thought-provoking, realistic, and timely film!
This is a film that oozes with realism and timeliness. The GTX corporation, headed by an overpaid, callous CEO (Craig T. Nelson)--who cares only about the stockholders, a new corporate headquarters, and his salary and stock options--cuts divisions and lays off thousands of workers--some of whom have been with him and the firm for decades. It's not that they aren't hardworking and dedicated, it's just "business."

One of the men who is laid off is in his thirties (Ben Affleck); the other is twenty years older (Chris Cooper). Another (Tommy Lee Jones) roomed in college with the CEO and helped him build the company from the ground up, concentrating on shipbuilding in the Boston area. All three men live lavishly, with fancy houses, furnishings, and cars.

Affleck is great as the proud, bitter, and then humbled white-collar executive, who has to sell his million-dollar home (in the depressed housing market) and Porsche, and then move in with his parents and work for his...

It's a Dog Eat Dog World
"The Company Men" is a sober telling of life within a modern company. Men come to be defined by their jobs and when the job is taken away from them, they are lost. Their world as they understand it simply collapses.

At a high level, "The Company Men" covers the lives of several executives of the ship building division of GTX Corporation, an American conglomerate. Profitability and growth seems to be eluding the division and the only response of management is downsizing and, when this fails, more downsizing. Each man is thrown into a whirlpool. Their lives of debt and over-consumption come to a screeching halt. If there is one message from this film it is that too many people assume that things won't change. Too little attention is paid to saving for a rainy day. Consumption is king.

There are excellent performances by Tommy Lee Jones and Ben Affleck. Both end up being "let go" and both struggle with the consequences. However, eventually, reality must be...

Could be the worst movie I've ever seen. Seriously.
When I first heard about this movie, I was very excited. The trailer looked scary as hell, and the premise was new and original for the slasher subgenre within horror. The mask was awesome (and still is), plus, Keith David (John Carpenter's The Thing, They Live, There's Something About Mary) was in it, how could it be bad? I was telling people about it, genuinely excited for its release. I even shelled out money to the website that the movie would premiere on, promising behind the scenes looks into the 'Making Of'. I joined their video submission contest to see if it would get into the movie. Independent movies like this, especially horror, are what really give fans things that are new and original, so I am happy to support them.

And then I saw it.

Now, this follows the fact that a week before the movie was set to premiere on VOD, the whole idea was shaken up, and AMC Theaters bought the rights to show the movie in various cities around the country, mine...

I wanted to love this
I wish I could give this movie five stars. I really do. I love the idea of a manifestation of human evil, coming alive through one of our greatest tools. I love the examination of "trolling" behavior and how it looks when people take that attitude into the real world. I love the idea of the extremes we can go through when we have the advantage of anonymity. And I love the idea of humanity being just a step in the evolution of something truly terrifying.

That being said though, the movie itself is a mess. Most of the actors are good, but the script is a jumbled mess. The dialogue is so overly-dramatic and jarring. It sounds to me like the writers spent a lot of time researching the inner-working of internet communities and personalities in a textbook, but never actually bothered to go online.

I enjoyed the reveal towards the end and thought it made for a very good ending, but the actual last couple of minutes were a little disappointing and predictable...

I saw this for free on Amazon Prime and I thank Amazon for saving me $10. The movie is basically about a killer that appears after you write something three times on your computer on a chat site kind of like an update of Bloody Mary or Candyman. It does hold my interest but the cast sucks & it dragged on for way too long. The big reveal made me confused & the ending screamed sequel. If you have Amazon Prime then check this out for free but do not pay for this movie. It's not worth the money.

Let Me In [HD]

Best of 2010 Series: LET ME IN
Let Me In is one of the most beautiful films of the year, and probably the best remake that I have ever seen. It is based on the Swedish film, Let The Right One In, which was released two years ago to monumental acclaim from both critics and art-house audiences alike. This touching story, concerning a young man's crush on a 12 year old vampire named Eli, captured the hearts and minds of everyone who was lucky enough to see it. If Ingmar Bergman were to direct a vampire-themed film, it would look a lot like this. However, one should not think of the film as yet another entry into the recent "vampire" craze. It is much more than that. This is the film that Twilight only wishes that it could be.

The remake deviates structurally from the original, only in that the opening is a bit different, and a few minor characters have been altered or dropped altogether. The integrity of the storytelling remains intact, and as a result, much of the remake resembles the original in all of...

Let Me In - Sublime, Engrossing, Beautiful
Back in 1992, I believe it was, "The Last of the Mohicans" starring Daniel Day-Lewis was released to a blockbuster reception by the public. It was exciting, well acted and beautiful. However, it was not a trans-literation (word for word) of the source novel by James Fenimore Cooper - far from it. Like many films that have novels as their story origin, you must endeavor to take the film on its own merits and not bemoan that what you loved in the book was not on the screen as you hoped. You can love both, one, or neither, but don't hate the one for being unlike the other.

This is the problem many early critical reviewers of "Let Me In" seemed to fall into. They had loved the original Swedish book and film ("Let the Right One In"), but didn't like this American version because the tone and focus is slightly different. (An example would be Reeves' decision to make nearly all characters in the film outside the primaries into archetypes, not only simplifying the narrative, but...

A great remake and an amazing film
It was with some amount of trepidation that I first heard about the impending release of Let Me In. Like many others, I was quite taken by the original Swedish film, Let the Right One In, which easily secured a spot on my Top 10 of that year. I feared that a remake would only excise the poetic nature of the story in favor of a by-the-numbers vampire film. The attachment of Matt Reeves as writer and director didn't do much to assuage my fears. Cloverfield was entertaining enough for what it was, but its gimmicky shaky-cam aesthetic wasn't very indicative of his directorial abilities. Once the good reviews of the film started pouring in, I figured I'd see it just to say that I did and then forget about its existence shortly thereafter.

Could I possibly have been more wrong? I ultimately saw the film five times during its brief theatrical run. It's been three months since then, and I still can't stop thinking about it. Never before has my reaction to a film been so contrary to...

Miracle of Marcelino

A Beautiful Tale
Reviewed by: Cory Giacobbe

I have never forgotten this film.

Let me emphasize broadly how wonderful this story is, without revealing critical details, climax and ending.

I saw this as a little girl. My entire grammar school viewed it together in the auditorium, and its shocking poignancy remained memorable for decades. (I'll thank the availability of home videos, for allowing me to see this film again, now).

The catalyst for the intense drama that follows is this scene: One exasperated monk, trying to instill discipline in a beloved orphan boy, conjures up a rule. He exclaims, "You must NEVER climb this stairway!" to the attic.

The monk, Brother Francisco, is the dominant parent-figure, among the twelve Italian Franciscan monks, in an Hispanic land, who have adopted the youngster, Marcelino, at infancy.

Marcelino, being a child, curious, mischievous, climbs the stairs. In the attic, what he finds there, how he responds, ultimately forces the humble,...

A Miracle of Spanish Cinema
There are many foreign films that captivated or inspired me,such as Roberto Benigni's "Life is Beautiful" and Federico Fellini's "Nights of Cabiria". But I haven't seen a foreign film so beautiful or so spiritual than Lidislao Vajda's "Miracle of Marcelino" (Marcelino pan y vino).
The Miracle of Marcelino is like a religious fairy tale that sends a message about hope and love. The film begins as an allegory where a town Franciscan monk is sent to tell a story to a terminally ill little girl about a miracle that occured several years ago. The story is based on the narration from this faithful monk.
After the Spanish civil war, twelve monks constructed their new monastary. Once they finished and settled in their new home, they had an unexpected surprise. A baby boy was given to them to take care of, inspite of their heavy work load. This boy, Marcelino, grows up to be a mischievous, but good hearted little five year old boy.
Because...

Restful Rain [HD]

Puts me right to sleep
I need something to help me drift off to sleep and this did the trick. My 5 & 7 yr old also fell right to sleep with this. I love when the thunder kicks in as well.

Nature's perfect midnight lullaby
As I've aged I find it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep, my mind racing with all the mechanisms of my day. I've tried lots of solutions but found sounds of nature are my keys to the doors of the slumber hotel. The only nature exceptions are crashing waves on a beach and squawking birds, which for some reason stimulate my thoughts.

The sounds of rain and echoes of distant thunder are my favorites of nature lullabies, exactly what Restful Rain provides. The images are relatively non-descript, but I use the video for the sounds, not the images. I have the Roku 3, the one where the remote has an earphone jack. I plug my most comfortable earbuds into the remote, start the video, then shut off the TV so all I'm listening to is the rain and muffled thunder. I'm asleep in less than fifteen minutes instead of tossing and turning for one to two hours. The video is only 35 minutes long but I've never heard the end of it.

Extremely Restful
To be honest, I don't think I've ever "watched" this all the way through, but I sure have slept to it many, many times! This is my go-to video when I take a nap at the end of the day. The sounds are so pleasant and soothing that it takes me no time to fall asleep. The visuals that I have seen are beautiful, as many of this series are. So glad they decided not to put music over these and just let the natural sounds come through. Love this video ...

The Cold Light Of Day

Not As Bad As These Reviewers Tell You ...!
OK, having seen this movie I know first hand that this movie is not as bad as it is made out to be by ALL the reviewers here on Amazon. I won't go over the plot and the actors, as they have been dug deeply into in the previous reviews. Instead, I shall tell you it like it truly is.

The movie, 'Cold Light Of Day' is a good, decent action movie. You get pulled in and it never lets you go. Why? Well, you just don't know who to trust and what is around any given corner. Sure Henry C. is made out to be a "super spy" instead of the stockbroker he seemingly is, but that's OK, as it truly doesn't deter you from watching the movie. My guess is this movie was made a couple of years ago before his upcoming blockbuster 'Superman - Man Of Steel' comes to our screens. Sometimes these kind of direct-to-DVD movies sit on shelves for ages until one of the leads becomes famous. (Take, for instance, 'Cabin In The Woods' with Chris Hemsworth, filmed in 2009 and released this year due to...

(2.5 STARS) "Frantic in Madrid": OK Thriller from the Director of "JCVD"
Henry Cavill (Theseus of Tarsem Singh-directed epic "Immortals") plays a young American businessman Will, who has just arrived in Spain to meet his family. While out on a yacht with his father Martin (Bruce Willis), mother Laurie (Caroline Goodall), young brother Josh (Rafi Gavron) and Josh's fiancée Dara (Emma Hamilton), Will makes a mistake and one of them gets injured. To buy a medicine, Will goes on shore alone, but when Will comes back, he finds everyone on the boat has disappeared.

"The Cold Light of Day" starts promisingly, and then it slowly loses momentum through a whole heap of cliché. Without revealing too much about the story, the US-Spanish thriller is about an American on foreign soil, who gets involved in a web of intrigue.

The film's basic idea (a bit sounds like "Frantic") is not bad. The problem is its poor execution. In short, the film has no style. Characters, storytelling, acting and action set-pieces - everything in the film is...

Wonderful!
I saw this movie at the theater and was waiting on it to come out on DVD. Love the action and actors.

Horrid Henry - The Movie

Ms. Battleax, Ms. Lovely, Ms. Oddbod, Moody Margaret...
My five year old son really likes it! My 12yr old watches it also, he laughs yet may not admit it. I enjoyed the humor, dancing, singing, vivid colors and characters despite the simple story.

Its Horridly Funny
My son isn't a big reader, but Horrid Henry is actually a book he picked up and read last year. Not only did he read it, he loved it. He was ecstatic when I told him they were making it into a movie. The story revolves around Henry, a little boy who has a tendancy to get into trouble. Set in England, Horrid Henry follows a crazy trouble making kid through all his rambunctious adventures. You'll meet his rather large family and watch him join forces with his nerdy neighbor Moody Margaret. The two become unlikely allies in a battle to win the talent show and help save their school.

This movie was so much fun to watch. It has a little of everything. Of course there is tons of slap stick humor, but it also teaches kids about the bonds of friendship and to never give up on their dreams. There's music, surprises, and a whole lot of laughs. On my end, I was excited to see Angelica Huston was a member of the cast. She was always been on of my favorite actresses. She plays...

Cute but predictable
I bought this for my grandson Henry and his siblings. They said it was just OK....they see everything that comes along.

As Goes Janesville

Great inside look into politics
Helped explain a lot of things. Exceptionally well done documentary. Well edited also. Worth watching if you are interested in politics or sociology.

Absolutely Interesting! Must See.
As goes Janesville is an exceptionally good film. The film makers paint a portrait of the painful predicament facing about 90% of America today: is the American Dream gone? Is it deferred? The film hints at some of the root causes but doesn't hit you over the head. The working class women at the center of the story are incredible humans, as so many women trying to make ends meet are. I highly recommend this film.

OK
It was a documentary of the war in Wisconsin. I was very much part of this war and found it OK from a different view point.
